Events at Camp Rilea/ General Tactical Info
Here is some general information about the tactical events
held at Camp Rilea OR. It was written specifically about events at Camp Rilea,
but much of it applies at other sites as well. It is a somewhat brief overview,
but should give you some ideas. Ask any questions. Event information is
generally posted at
http://www.nwha.org/events.html as early as it becomes available. That
allows members to plan their schedules.
Arrival:
Friday afternoon at the Main Gate, Camp Rilea OR. Tell the gate guard you are
one of the reenactors. Have some ID ready. The gate personnel know to expect us.
No live ammunition. No live ammunition. No live ammunition. No live ammunition.
Drive straight ahead down the road until it curves to the left at about 0.5
miles. Ahead on the left are the barracks. We will normally be in one of them.
Ask anyone you see. They can point to the correct barrack for 11.Panzer.
Generally, we try to arrive as early as possible Fri afternoon, but everyone
understands that those members who travel farther or who have other commitments
will generally arrive later.
Billeting:
Modern barracks with integral latrine and showers. Lockable storage lockers.
Bring a lock if you are so inclined. Some do, some don't. We try to maintain as
period-appropriate appearance in the barracks as possible. Proper bedding
includes blue and white checked German-style blanket cover and pillow cover,
with a white flat twin-sized sheet. We generally use German or Italian blankets.
If this is your first event, you may not be able to get them in time, so perhaps plan on
bringing a sleeping bag. Take
a look at what we use, and you will know what to have for the next time. You
should be able to get it all for about $35.00USD or so. If you want a proper
square German-style pillow, figure about an additional $9.00USD.
Meals:
Meals are normally on a provide-your-own basis. You might want to bring a
cooler to keep food and drinks in your car.
Fri dinner - Depends upon your preferences. There is a quite good little
restaurant on base called "Kilroys", but they have been reducing their menu and
serving hours lately. They may or may not serve on weekends, so they might be
open Fri evening only if at all. There are lots of fast food and real restaurants in Astoria and Warrenton
and Seaside. If you go off base, you can't wear your German uniform.
Sat and Sun breakfast - Again depends upon your preferences. You can get up early
and go into town for a real breakfast,
or have a cup of coffee and a croissant in the barrack (or whatever else you
want to bring to eat).
Sat lunch in the field - We generally try to have period foods, and
prefer to not see Twinkies and cans of Coke. Some good German bread, maybe a
Landjäger sausage, some cheese, whatever you fancy, wrapped in waxed and/or
brown paper. No MREs. Whatever you can carry easily in a rucksack, bread bag,
pockets, gas mask bag, etc.
Sat dinner - Something of a mixed bag. Some guys want to go out for the
evening meal, some want to stay in the spirit of 1944 and prepare their own meals at
billeting. No stoves allowed inside billeting. Lots of options.
The tactical event itself:
Friday:
Meet and greet. Make new friends. Look at gear. Get into period uniform. Get
squared away. Pay Event Fee. Buy blanks. Complete an NWHA Membership Application
as either a Member or as a Guest if you haven't already done so. If you are
applying as a Member, the NWHA Annual Membership Dues is $20.00USD for an
Individual Membership or $30.00USD for a Family Membership. If you just want to
try it out before you commit, you may attend one event as a Guest paying only
the Event Fee. Payments are in US funds and may be made by cash or by check made
out to "NWHA". Separate checks for Event Fee and Membership Dues. If enough
people show up early enough on Fri afternoon, the plan may be to conduct some
training.
Saturday:
Assemble at 0830. Safety inspection. Briefings. Head out at 0900. Tactical event
commences when appropriate. Break for lunch when appropriate for maybe 45-60
minutes. Re-commence. Quit at 1600 or so. Back to the barracks to clean up, etc.
Sat evening. Awards Formation at 1730. Possible NWHA Board Meeting (all members
welcome to attend) at maybe 1900.
Sunday:
Same as Sat morning. Quit at around 1100. Back to the barracks. Pack up gear.
Help clean up the barracks. Wait for the barracks turn-in inspection. Say goodbye to
your new buddies. Start counting down the days until the next event. Most times
subject to change, of course. Please take the time to read through the NWHA
Bylaws and Policies found at
http://www.nwha.org/bylaws_index.html. Please pay particular attention to
the Safety Policy and the Tactical Battles Policy.
Bring ear protection. Ear plugs, not ear muffs.
